Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Monday, fulfilled his campaign promise by swearing in three judges previously overlooked by the Godwin Obaseki administration. The ceremony, held at the Festival Hall of the Government House, marked a significant step towards correcting what the governor described as past injustices.
The judges—Justices Ojo Osa, Okundamiya Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe—were part of eight judicial officers recommended for appointment by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in June 2023. However, while five of their colleagues were sworn in last year, the trio was excluded by the former administration despite meeting all NJC requirements.
Governor Okpebholo highlighted his commitment to fairness and equity, stating, “During my swearing-in ceremony on November 12, 2024, I pledged to address the case of these judges. Today, we correct the oversight, ensuring that no one is marginalised or excluded due to personal biases or lack of political affiliations.”
He further charged the newly inaugurated judges to maintain integrity, uphold citizens’ rights, and deliver justice without fear or favour. “The judiciary plays a critical role under the doctrine of separation of powers. These judges will now join their peers on the bench to strengthen the judiciary’s role in Edo State,” the governor affirmed.
Justice Ojo, speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in judges, expressed gratitude to the governor for his decisive action, noting that it brought long-awaited relief just three weeks into his administration.
This development underscores Governor Okpebholo’s resolve to foster inclusivity and fairness, reinforcing public confidence in the state’s judiciary.
