Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has criticized the arrest of Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights lawyer, describing it as a misuse of police powers and a threat to democratic principles in Nigeria. Farotimi was reportedly arrested over allegations of defamation.
“This action is a gross misuse of police powers and a grave assault on the principles of democracy and justice in Nigeria,” Obi said in a statement. “It represents not only an attempt to intimidate opposing voices from questioning authority but also a worrying signal to every Nigerian who values freedom of expression.”
Obi emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force exists to protect citizens’ rights, not to suppress them. “Defamation, by its nature, is a civil matter that should be addressed in court through due legal process in line with the rule of law in a democracy.”
Reflecting on his personal experience, Obi stated, “As a private citizen and former governor, I have been frequently defamed and insulted. Yet, I have never resorted to using the police to silence others. Those who feel aggrieved should seek redress through proper legal channels.”
He urged the police to uphold professionalism and independence, asserting, “Dele Farotimi should be released immediately and unconditionally. The police must recognize that their allegiance is to the Constitution and the people of Nigeria, not to narrow interests.”
“A new, more just Nigeria is possible,” Obi concluded.
