Governor Okpebholo to Swear In Three High Court Judges

The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the swearing-in of three State High Court judges-designate. The ceremony is scheduled for today, December 2, 2024, at 1:00 PM in the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Benin City.

The judges, Ojo Maureen Osa, Godwin Jeff Okundamiya, and Edoghogho Eboigbe, were among eight candidates recommended by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in June 2023. However, they were excluded from the swearing-in process in May 2024 under the previous administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

In a statement, Governor Okpebholo explained the decision, saying, “This underscores my administration’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and respecting the doctrine of separation of powers as enshrined in our Constitution. Strengthening the judiciary is essential to delivering justice and fairness to the public.”

The Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, also commented, describing the move as “a necessary step to enable the judiciary to perform its mandate effectively.”

Legal experts and stakeholders have commended the governor for addressing the delay and reinforcing the state’s judicial system. The new judges are expected to contribute to efficient justice delivery and uphold the integrity of the judiciary in Edo State.
