The Peace in South East Project (PISE-P), spearheaded by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has provided financial support totaling ₦37 million and essential food items to 41 families of security personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty across the Southeast.
This initiative, aimed at providing succor to grieving families, was highlighted in a statement issued by the Peace Fund’s media unit on Tuesday. Speaking during the disbursement event at the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters in Amawbia, the Chairman of the Fund, Daniel Akwari, emphasized the commitment to alleviating the burdens faced by families left behind by slain officers.
Mary Ikoku, Secretary of the Fund, extended heartfelt condolences to the widows and families, stressing that while no financial support could replace their loss, the assistance was intended to help ease their struggles.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, expressed profound gratitude to Kalu and the Peace Fund team for their generous contributions. He urged other public-spirited individuals to emulate such acts of compassion, noting that ensuring security was a collective responsibility.
State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, commended the efforts of the Peace Fund and linked them to the security and peace-building strides of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.
Sam Hart, Publicity Secretary of the Peace Fund, revealed that the initiative has reached all states in the Southeast and plans to expand its outreach to other parts of Nigeria impacted by insecurity.
Highlights of Kalu’s Outreach
- Support Across Southeast: Following the brutal murder of two soldiers in Aba, Abia State, Kalu launched a seven-member Peace Fund Committee in June 2024. The committee has since supported families in Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Anambra states.
- Anambra Outreach: During the Anambra visit, families of six slain policemen received ₦1 million each, along with food supplies. Injured officer Inspector Sunday Eze was also supported with ₦200,000 for medical bills.
- Past Contributions: Kalu previously donated ₦10 million to families of fallen soldiers during a visit to the 144 Battalion Headquarters in Ukwa West, Abia State.
Recipients of the Peace Fund’s support, including Susan Nse Udo and Ani Chinenye Anthonia, expressed profound gratitude to Kalu, noting that the assistance would significantly alleviate their pain and challenges.
