The Federal Government has pledged to provide a lasting solution to the recurring flood problem in Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), following a meeting between Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, and the institution’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Hon. (Mrs) Lola Fibisola Akande.
Sen. Akume expressed concern over the devastating impact of floods on properties during every rainy season, and assured that the government would take action to address the issue. The meeting, held at the Office of the SGF in Abuja, was also attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Partnerships, Prof. Sama’ila Usman Dakyes.
Hon. Akande presented disturbing images of flood-ravaged areas in FULafia, along with a plan to tackle the problem, which visibly moved Sen. Akume to promise action before the next rainy season.
This development comes as the Federal Government has identified several states, including Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Adamawa, Benue, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Jigawa, Kogi, Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Ondo, Ogun, Rivers, Taraba, and the FCT, as flood-prone areas . The government has warned that heavy rainfall may worsen the spread of cholera in these regions.
