Four police officers attached to Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, have been detained for allegedly extorting N10 million from a group of young Nigerians. The affected officers are ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine.
According to reports, the officers accosted the victims in Yenagoa and forcibly collected the money before fleeing the scene . However, thanks to the efforts of the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 16, the money has been recovered, and the officers have been taken into custody.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has condemned the alleged extortion, emphasizing the force’s zero-tolerance policy for corruption and misconduct. The officers are currently facing orderly room trial, and severe consequences await any officer found culpable, regardless of rank.
This incident is not isolated, as there have been previous reports of police extortion in Bayelsa State. For instance, a Nigerian man, Kelechi Isaac, recently accused police operatives in Bayelsa of extorting N3 million from him at gunpoint.
The Nigeria Police Force reassures the public that all allegations will be thoroughly investigated to ensure restorative justice.
