Edo State Workers Face Uncertainty as Alleged E-gov Manipulations Delay Salary Payments Amid Transition

Tension is building among Edo State civil servants and government workers due to alleged manipulations in the E-gov system, raising doubts about timely salary payments. These manipulations are rumored to stem from the outgoing administration’s attempts to delete sensitive documents and cover up suspected financial mismanagement, according to credible sources from the Government House and the Ministry of Finance.

The Edo State Government has a history of punctual salary payments, traditionally disbursed on the 24th of each month. However, delays have followed the announcement of a new ₦70,000 minimum wage in June, as the government has struggled to meet its usual payroll schedule. This uncertainty has left state employees anxious, with insiders pointing to the recent wage increase as a key factor in disrupting the established system.

This minimum wage change, which many perceive as politically motivated to attract voters during the September gubernatorial election, has highlighted challenges within the government’s payment system. Now, three days beyond the regular payday, workers remain uncertain about when they’ll receive October salaries. Sources indicate that problems with the E-gov system, critical to daily government operations, have obstructed salary processing and delayed the release of payroll vouchers.

Independent analysts are questioning why the previously praised E-gov infrastructure is suddenly experiencing issues at the close of the current administration’s term. Observers suggest that these reported glitches may be intentional, allowing Governor Obaseki’s administration to alter sensitive records and complicate the transition for the incoming government.

Dan Igbinigie, a close observer, remarked, “Something is fishy and not right. Delays in salary payments seem to have coincided with the announcement of the ₦70,000 minimum wage. The once-reliable 24th salary payment is now in doubt, and the information we are receiving about October salaries suggests the e-gov is either down or malfunctioning.”

These suspicions have sparked questions: Does the state lack the resources to sustain the ₦70,000 minimum wage? If so, why was this policy implemented without thorough consideration? Is this an attempt to hide records on the E-gov platform? Igbinigie urged Governor Obaseki to address these concerns openly, pressing for transparency regarding the government’s current predicament.

Governor Obaseki, who has faced increasing administrative controversies following his party’s loss in the recent elections, has also been accused of withholding key documents needed for a smooth transition to the new administration. Although the Edo State government claims a commitment to on-time salary payments and responsible financial management, the present situation casts doubts on the effectiveness and transparency of its systems.
