Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has sounded the alarm on the growing youth unrest in Nigeria, cautioning that the country is “sitting on a keg of gunpowder” due to widespread unemployment and lack of opportunities. Obasanjo’s warning comes as the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests continue to sweep across the nation, with demonstrators demanding action from the President Bola Tinubu-led government.
Obasanjo emphasized the urgent need for skill empowerment, employment, and investment in Nigeria’s youth to prevent a potentially catastrophic situation. He also expressed concerns about the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, warning that those profiting from fuel importation may attempt to hinder its progress.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Obasanjo described the refinery as a crucial project that should inspire investment in Nigeria. He also criticized the country’s reliance on crude oil, calling it a “deadly mistake” and highlighting the importance of harnessing Nigeria’s gas resources.
