A Federal High Court in Abuja has reinstated Philip Shaibu as Edo State’s Deputy Governor, declaring his impeachment illegal.
Justice James Omotosho ruled that Shaibu’s removal and replacement with Omobayo Godwins was “illegal, unconstitutional, null and void.”
The court found that the impeachment process breached Section 188(1) to (9) of the procedure and cited the Supreme Court’s decision in Inakoju v. Adeleke (2007).
The court ordered the Inspector General of Police to “immediately restore the security of the Plaintiff as Deputy Governor of Edo State.”
Supporters of Shaibu celebrated the verdict, seen as a victory against a politically motivated impeachment attempt due to his gubernatorial aspirations.
The court’s decision is a significant development in the political landscape of Edo State. The case has garnered significant attention, and this ruling is the latest update in the ongoing situation.
Further developments are expected in the coming days.
