The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, made a startling allegation on Friday at a leadership conference organized by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Lagos. He claimed that some religious organizations in Nigeria are “more corrupt” than public offices.
Olukoyede revealed that the EFCC recently recovered a large sum of money, running into millions, from a religious organization. He criticized religious leaders for focusing on the wrongdoings of others while ignoring their own corrupt practices. He urged clerics to use their platforms to demonstrate good character and integrity, rather than just preaching.
The EFCC boss expressed concern that some religious leaders live extravagant lifestyles without visible means of legitimate income, relying on church or mosque funds. He emphasized that some religious organizations are more corrupt than public offices, and he has evidence to support this claim.
This is not the first time Olukoyede has made such allegations. In January, he revealed that the EFCC uncovered a religious sect involved in money laundering for terrorists in Nigeria. His statements have sparked calls for greater transparency and accountability in religious organizations.
