President Bola Tinubu has reinstated Professor Nenibarini Zabbey as the Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP). This development comes two days after Dr. Olufemi Adekanmbi was appointed as the new Project Coordinator.
According to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the reinstatement takes immediate effect. The Presidency explained that the decision was made after a performance review of the HYPREP Project Coordinator, and it was concluded that Zabbey is fit to continue discharging his functions as guided by the regulations governing the project’s execution.
Zabbey was first appointed as HYPREP Coordinator in May 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, succeeding Dr. Giadom Dumbari. The Presidency had announced the change in leadership, stating that Zabbey’s appointment was with immediate effect.
The reinstatement of Zabbey as Project Coordinator indicates a reversal of the earlier decision to replace him with Adekanmbi. The development suggests that the President has confidence in Zabbey’s ability to lead the project, which aims to remediate hydrocarbon pollution in affected areas.
