Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, has praised the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy, describing it as a victory for democracy and Nigerians. The apex court’s judgement, delivered on Thursday, granted full autonomy to local government councils, declaring that they should receive and manage their allocations directly.
Senator Moro, a long-time advocate for local government autonomy, commended the Supreme Court judges for their landmark decision, stating that it will bring rapid development to the grassroots level, where the majority of Nigerians reside and conduct business. He urged governors to respect the ruling and allow local governments to function optimally for the benefit of all Nigerians.
The senator’s efforts to secure local government autonomy have been consistent, having sponsored a constitutional amendment bill seeking administrative and financial independence for local government areas. The bill has passed its first reading. Senator Moro’s motion in December 2023, condemning the arbitrary dissolution of democratically elected local government councils by governors, was also a significant step towards achieving this goal.
The Supreme Court’s judgement is seen as a significant victory for democracy and a testament to the power of the judiciary in upholding the rights of the people.
