EFCC Arrests 127 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Ondo Nightclub Raid

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 127 individuals suspected of internet fraud in a raid on two nightclubs in Akure, Ondo State. The operation, which took place on June 8, 2024, also resulted in the seizure of various items, including cars, laptops, and phones.

According to reports, the EFCC operatives stormed the nightclubs around 1 am, shooting sporadically into the air and causing panic among the patrons. Many people were injured in the chaos, including security personnel.

The suspects, including a groom-to-be and his friends who were celebrating his bachelor’s eve, were arrested and taken away by the EFCC operatives. The commission also confiscated various items, including vehicles, laptops, sophisticated phones, and other items. The CCTV equipment from the nightclubs was also removed by the operatives.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Human Rights, Hon. Abiola Makinde, has condemned the raid, describing it as an invasion of the privacy of innocent citizens. He has called for an investigation into the matter and urged the EFCC to respect human rights in their operations.

The EFCC has not yet released an official statement on the arrest, but it is believed that the suspects will be charged to court soon. The commission has been cracking down on internet fraud in recent times, and this raid is seen as part of its efforts to combat the menace.
