President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for the nomination of at least 555 individuals to serve as Pro-Chancellors/Chairmen and members of the Governing Boards of 111 federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
This approval follows the selection of nominees by the Ministry of Education.
The Presidency when contacted for confirmation, stated:
“This is from the Federal Ministry of Education…they make the nominations and forward them to the President to sign. But they are at liberty to release it from their end,” as explained by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, on Saturday.
These appointments come at a time when the Academic Staff Union of Universities has threatened to embark on another strike, which could disrupt the academic calendar and cause further setbacks in the higher education sector.
The union has expressed concerns over the failure to appoint Governing Councils for federal universities and has criticized the Federal Government’s attitude towards academic matters.
During a briefing at the University of Abuja, the union also expressed dissatisfaction with the 35% salary increment for professors and 25% for other academics in the university system.
