The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has doubled down on their stance that the judiciary, and not the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), poses a threat to the nation’s democracy. This comes in response to former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s recent claim that the judiciary is the biggest threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
The AYCF, led by Yerima Shettima, stated that Obi’s remarks have only reaffirmed their long-held position that INEC, under the leadership of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, is a credible institution. They argue that INEC consistently upholds principles of fairness, impartiality, and transparency in its electoral processes.
Obi made his comments during a keynote speech at the fifth memorial of late Justice Anthony Aniagolu, where he emphasized the importance of an effective judiciary in ensuring a thriving democracy. He critiqued the judiciary as the main obstacle to Nigeria’s progress, rather than the electoral commission.
The AYCF stands firm in their belief that the judiciary holds more influence over the country’s democratic system than INEC does. They continue to advocate for a transparent and accountable judiciary to uphold the principles of democracy in Nigeria.
