Minister seeks Custodia Centres Reform

In a bid to address the deplorable condition of custodial centres in Niger State, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called for urgent reforms to be implemented.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the need for improvements in the living conditions of inmates, as well as the overall security and management of the facilities. He expressed his concern over the overcrowding and poor hygiene in many of the custodial centres, which he described as “unacceptable”.

The Minister also stressed the importance of rehabilitation programs for inmates, to help them reintegrate into society upon their release. He highlighted the role of the government in providing support and resources for these programs, and urged for a collaborative effort between all relevant stakeholders.

Tunji-Ojo’s call for reforms comes in the wake of recent reports of human rights abuses and overcrowding in Nigerian prisons, which have raised concerns among human rights activists and international organizations.

The Minister assured that the government is committed to addressing these challenges and improving the conditions of custodial centres across the country. He urged for swift action to be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of inmates, as well as the effectiveness of the criminal justice system.

It remains to be seen how the government will proceed with the reforms, but Tunji-Ojo’s statements indicate a firm commitment to improving the custodial system in Niger State and beyond.
