Government of Rev. Fr. Alia Debunks Allegations of Borrowing Since Inauguration in May 2023

The government of Rev. Fr. Alia in Benue State has refuted claims of borrowing any money since assuming office in May 2023. This response comes in the wake of a report published in the Punch Newspaper on Sunday, March 31st, 2024, which alleged that 13 new state governors, including Benue, collectively borrowed N226.8bn from domestic and external financiers between June and December 2023, based on sub-national debt reports released by the Debt Management Office (DMO).

The government of Rev. Fr. Alia clarified that no funds have been borrowed from either domestic or external sources during their tenure. It was emphasized that any debts mentioned in the report were incurred prior to the administration taking office on May 29th, 2023.

Asserting a cautious approach towards borrowings, the administration stated that any borrowing would only be considered if essential and beneficial to the people of Benue State, particularly for critical projects.

The government also called on the reporter from the Punch Newspaper to engage in thorough investigation and ensure accurate reporting, highlighting the importance of factual and balanced journalism practices.
