839 Auto Crashes in Ogun State Result in 351 Fatalities in 2023, FRSC Reports

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revealed that a staggering 839 auto crashes occurred in Ogun State in 2023, claiming the lives of at least 351 people. This information was disclosed by the State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Anthony Uga, during a press conference held in Ota on Thursday.

In addition to the fatalities, Uga pointed out that a total of 2,092 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries in these accidents. According to Uga, the primary causes of the crashes were as a result of drivers’ excessive speeding and other traffic violations. Wrongful overtaking, tyre bursts, and night journeys were also identified as contributing factors.

Concerned by the alarming statistics, Uga called on motorists to refrain from over-speeding and dangerous driving, especially those traveling along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. He emphasized the importance of installing speed-limiting devices in vehicles and strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations to mitigate accidents.

To further enhance road safety awareness, Uga advised against the use of expired tyres and encouraged motorists to ensure proper rest before embarking on long journeys. The FRSC plans to conduct public enlightenment campaigns at motor parks, churches, and mosques to educate the public on the significance of safe motoring.

Additionally, the FRSC intends to visit schools throughout the state to educate students on the importance of embracing road safety culture from an early age. By advocating for responsible driving practices among the youth, the FRSC hopes to foster a generation that prioritizes safety on the road.

With these initiatives, the FRSC seeks to reduce the number of auto crashes, injuries, and fatalities in Ogun State. Motorists and the general public are urged to support these efforts by adhering to traffic regulations and prioritizing road safety for all.
