In a recent statement, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), affirmed his determination to face trial on terrorism allegations made against him by the Federal Government. Kanu’s stance comes in response to the last Friday Supreme Court verdict, which ruled that he must face trial for these charges.
Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, issued the statement on behalf of his client after visiting the Department State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja, where Kanu was detained for over two years. Ejiofor expressed confidence that Kanu would emerge victorious in the legal battle.
Despite his acceptance of the Supreme Court’s verdict, Kanu urged the public to consider the ramifications of the decision. Quoting sections of the Nigerian constitution, he questioned whether the court’s ruling effectively repealed the Nigerian laws that were cited in their brief before the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the militia arm of IPOB, also made headlines as it celebrated its third anniversary. In commemoration of the occasion, the security outfit issued a warning to herdsmen, thugs, and vigilante groups operating in the South-East region. Additionally, the ESN called on the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) to cease the alleged abduction of individuals in the state.
As the trial against Nnamdi Kanu moves forward, his determination remains unwavering, despite the recent Supreme Court verdict. The ongoing proceedings are expected to shed light on the terrorism allegations lodged against him, testing the resilience of not only Kanu but also the Nigerian judicial system.
