It was gathered by Hobnob News reports that the Supreme Court on Friday rejected the appeal by the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu for his immediate release from detention.
Apparently the Supreme Court decision quashed the judgement of the Court of Appeal of October 2022 which ordered the release of Nnamdi Kanu and also quashed the terrorism charges filed against him by the Federal Government.
According to Hobnob News reports, the Supreme Court decision was delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, but written by Justice Garba Lawal. No reason was immediately available why Justice Lawal did not read the judgment.
The Supreme Court the Nigerian government may have been guilty of recklessly and unlawfully bringing Kanu from Kenya but that that illegality did not protect the IPOB leader from further trial.According to Justice Lawal no Nigerian law was cited in the suit by Kanu to demand his release besides the claim that he was illegally abducted from Kenya. The Supreme Court as such advised Nnamdi Kanu to seek remedy for the abduction in a civil case.
Based on the Supreme Court ordered Nnamdi Kanu to defend himself of the seven charges of terrorism among others instituted against him by the Federal Government.
The Supreme Court decision on Kanu came a day after one of the leading Southeast advocates for his release, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife died in Abuja.
