Amnesty International has criticized Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu for failing to uphold human rights in the country during his first six months in office. The international human rights body made this statement during a public presentation of their document titled “Nigeria: Human Rights Agenda 2023” in Abuja.
The document extensively highlights various areas where human rights violations are prevalent in Nigeria. Amnesty International claims that President Tinubu’s new government policies do not effectively address these violations.
However, the organization also acknowledges that President Tinubu still has the opportunity to ensure that all Nigerians enjoy their human rights. Amnesty International urges the president to take action by holding accountable those responsible for past rights violations.
During the launch of the human rights agenda, Isa Sanusi, the country director of Amnesty International Nigeria, stressed the importance of setting an agenda for the Tinubu-led administration when it comes to protecting human rights. Sanusi revealed that copies of the agenda had been sent to President Tinubu and other top government officials, aiming to guide them in taking a new course of action against rights violations.
“We implore the government to prioritize the protection of human rights by ensuring that the rights of every Nigerian are safeguarded, and that those responsible for breaching these rights face consequences,” said Sanusi in his opening statement.
President Tinubu’s stance on human rights, especially in addressing rampant violations across the country, will be crucial in determining the success of his administration’s tenure and its commitment to upholding human rights in Nigeria.
