Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has initiated the payment of N1bn as gratuity to teachers and local government workers who retired in 2011. The governor, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties, Mr. Dare Aragbaiye, stated that the funds were sourced from the October allocation from the federation account.
Acknowledging the importance of addressing the backlog of gratuity arrears, Akeredolu explained that the N1bn payment marked the beginning of a gradual defrayment for retirees of Local Government and Primary school teachers. He further assured that another tranche would be paid within the first quarter of the next year.
It was revealed that some pensioners who retired in 2012 had already received their payments, while the government also extended the benefits of the N1bn to distressed retirees.
Governor Akeredolu emphasized his commitment to the welfare of pensioners in the state, stating that his administration had cleared all outstanding salaries, pensions, and allowances left by the previous administration. He added that efforts were being made to eradicate criminal activities, miscreants, and cult-related incidents in the state, making it a safe environment for citizens to conduct their daily businesses.
The administration is also focused on strengthening the Amotekun Corps, providing them with the necessary equipment and resources. Additionally, the state government is supporting other security agencies operating in Ondo State to ensure the safety and well-being of the people.
