Lagos State Commissioner Denies Demolitions are Targeted at Specific Group

Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, has brushed off allegations that the ongoing demolition exercises in the state are aimed at targeting any particular group. In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Wednesday, Olumide stated that the demolitions are part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and ensure proper urban development.

Contrary to popular belief, Olumide emphasized that the demolitions were not driven by any ulterior motives and were instead focused on ensuring compliance with existing urban planning regulations. He further added that the demolitions were in line with the state’s broader agenda to create a more habitable and sustainable environment for all residents of Lagos.

While addressing concerns about the displacement resulting from the demolitions, the Commissioner assured affected individuals that the government had plans in place to provide them with alternative housing arrangements. He stressed that the government was committed to ensuring that those affected by the demolitions were not left homeless or abandoned.

Furthermore, Olumide encouraged affected residents to cooperate with government officials during the process and urged them to contact the appropriate authorities to voice their concerns or seek clarification. He emphasized that the government was open to engaging with affected parties and would address any grievances or issues that arise during the demolition exercises.

The Commissioner’s statement comes in response to growing criticisms over recent demolitions in the state, with some alleging that certain communities or groups were being unfairly targeted. In an effort to dispel these allegations, Olumide reiterated that the demolitions were purely driven by the need for efficient urban planning and development, providing a safe and conducive environment for all residents of Lagos.

As the demolitions continue, the state government will undoubtedly face increased scrutiny and calls for transparency. It remains to be seen how the government will navigate these challenges and ensure that all residents are treated fairly and equitably throughout the process.
