A student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), has embarked on a 50-hour hand wash-a-thon in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record. Enitan, a 200-level Linguistics and African Languages student, officially commenced the hand washing exercise on Friday with the support of the school’s Students’ Union leadership.
Enitan had notified the Guinness World Record of her intentions in June this year, and was given the date of November 24th, 2023 to carry out her attempt. The venue for the wash-a-thon was set at the school campus in Ile-Ife, and students and staff of the institution gathered to cheer her on.
Expressing her optimism before the start of the challenge, Enitan said, “My background and the lessons life has taught me have been motivating me to embark on this wash-a-thon. My experience is unexplainable, but it has taught me to be selfless. I am confident that I will reach the set goal of 50 hours of hand wash, and by God’s grace, I will emerge victorious.”
Enitan also expressed her gratitude for the support she has received from her colleagues. She called on Nigerians to rally behind her as she works towards completing the task. “Despite the massive support from my colleagues here, I pray for the grace of God to be able to complete the task. My parents are very supportive, and I urge Nigerians to rally round me while I work towards completing the task,” she said.
The Student Union President, Abbas Akinremi-Ojo, revealed that all necessary support, including ambulance services, lighting, and water, has been put in place to ensure Enitan’s success in the challenge. The management of OAU, through the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor John Odedire, also reiterated their commitment to providing whatever it takes to ensure Enitan clinches the Guinness World Record.
As Enitan continues her 50-hour hand wash-a-thon, observers are eagerly awaiting the outcome of her record-breaking attempt. With the support of her university and the well wishes of Nigerians, she aims to make history as the title holder of the longest hand-washing hours.
