Former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele is now in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) released him.
Emefiele is currently being interrogated by the EFCC with indications rife that fresh charges will be filed against him.
Emefiele had been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) for about 4 months after he was suspended by President Bola Tinubu.
After his suspension, he was directed to hand over to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, then deputy governor, operations directorate at the apex bank.
The DSS then later announced that Emefiele was in its custody for “some investigative reasons”.
He was on July 25, arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Lagos, and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.
The Nigerian government later withdrew the two-count charge on August 17 but a fresh 20-count charge was instituted against him over an alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud, among others.
