How my best friend snatched my boyfriend — Doyin, BBN housemate

Background

I come from a very small and close-knit family. I have an elder sister and two younger brothers. My mum is still alive, but my dad is late.

Education

For my elementary education, I attended Lantana Private School. For my secondary education, I attended Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary. I went on to study Radiology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos.

Support

My mum has always been my biggest supporter. I remember when I wanted to audition for Big Brother Naija, I told her that I was tired of medicine, and I wanted to do something else. I told her I would like to audition for BBN and she supported me. She told me to do whatever I wanted to do, adding that she trusts my judgment to do what is right.

Personality

I would describe my personality as a mix of Michelle Obama (a former First Lady of the United States of America) and Cardi B (an American rapper). I actually have two extreme sides. I have a side that is very serious, focused, feminist, wants to stand up for people, and always do what is right. That is what I call the ‘Michelle Obama side’.

I have yet another side that is very edgy, controversial and sexy; and those are the things that Cardi B embodies.

Motivation

My biggest motivations are my future kids. I want to give my kids a beautiful life. I want them to be financially comfortable, and that is why I work and do everything that I do. I save a lot. I practically don’t spend any of my money. I just put everything aside, and I am doing that because of my future kids, even though I don’t have them yet. I have so many plans for them.

Podcast

I chose to start a podcast because it was something I had always wanted to do. I have always liked talking, even before I went for BBN. I have always wanted to do something that would give me the opportunity to speak and share my opinions, because I am very opinionated. I have opinions on almost everything. I figured that there was no better way to share my opinions than to have a podcast.

Also, hosting is something I really want to do. I am a firm believer that if one wants to get something, one has to start one way or the other. If I want people to trust me to host their events, I should be doing something for myself that would show them what I can do. Though it seems everybody is doing podcasts these days, I hope mine would be different, because I am not going to talk about basic or frivolous things that everybody talks about, such as money, love, girls, men and relationships. I hope to discuss topics that people shy away from.

Entertainment

So far, my experience in the entertainment industry has been smooth. I have not really faced any hurdles or had any issues with anybody, so it has been great. I have met quiet a number of people and I have been able to network, so I cannot complain. The journey has been good so far.

Challenges

I have had some challenges with my podcast. The most difficult hurdle has been getting guests. Because podcasts are everywhere these days and most of them are about frivolous and trivial things, it could be very difficult to get guests on podcasts. The moment one says, ‘I have a podcast’, people think one wants them to come and talk about breasts and butts, or money and love. I often have to explain to people that my podcast is different.

Friendship

I am close friends with Beauty and Modella. We met in Big Brother’s house, but we have been able to build a friendship that has outlived the show and would continue to blossom. We have a very good bond. We are friends that are not afraid to disagree with one another and reconcile. We have our issues, and we settle them between ourselves without anybody even knowing that we had any issues. It is a very special friendship to me, and I hope that we can keep it going for as long as we can. I hope that our kids would also be friends.

Memories

Related News
My most unforgettable experience was when I lost my dad. That is the biggest curveball life has ever thrown at me. I was not expecting it. Before I lost my dad, I used to think that bad things could not happen to me. I thought my life was always going to be perfect because everything was going well. I come from a family that is well-to-do. There was so much money, and we had workers all around. My father’s death actually changed my life, and the way I see life in general. I could not get past it or understand why God would take away someone I was so close to. At that time, I did not even have a (tight) relationship with my mum, because my dad was everything to me.

Deal breaker

Transparency means everything to me. If my partner tells me that he made a mistake and is sorry, I would accept that. I am not going to leave my partner because he cheated. I would appreciate the fact that he came to me with that information, and I will forgive him for that. However, if it becomes a pattern and I notice that he is a chronic cheat, I won’t stay with him.

My deal breaker in a relationship is lies. If you lie about everything and I cannot take your word for it, I cannot be with you, because I would never believe anything you say to me. It does not matter how painful it is, I want to hear it. I would always prioritise honesty and transparency over anything in a relationship, because I believe that a bond cannot be built on lies.

Relationship

I am very single. I am talking to a couple of people, but I am single. I am not in any relationship for now.

Stereotype

The stereotype that irks me the most is the fact that people think that girls that take part in BBN come out and just meet sugar daddies, who would take care of their lifestyle. I am not saying that it does not happen, because it actually does. The show exposes one to a lot of high-value men, and most men are usually willing to do anything to get a woman they want. However, it is unfair to generalise, and say that is all women from the show do. There are many women that have been on the show who are really making their money from their talents.

It is wrong to disregard their hard work, and attribute everything they have done to men.

Betrayal

I have been betrayed before. I used to have a best friend, and we were very close. As a matter of fact, people used to refer to us as twins, because we even looked alike. At the time, I had a boyfriend, but she always discouraged me and told me that he was not good looking, because he had a bad leg and used to limp a little bit. She would always make jokes about his leg. At some point, I took her with me to visit him. Somehow, they exchanged numbers and I did not find out. I was dating him and did not even realise that my best friend was also dating him. Till this day, they are still together. They actually have a son together, and I wish them well. But, at the same time, I felt betrayed. That really affected the way I trust people.

Relaxation

I drink a lot of wine, relax and stay off social media. On days that I want to unwind, I do not open my phone to check social media. I have people that I talk to about the things that are stressing me out. I also hang out with friends that I had before BBN, because it gives me a sense of who I was before the show, and keeps me grounded.

Travels

I really enjoyed my trip to Maldives. I like to relax, and I enjoy visiting new places. The Maldives was very relaxing and romantic. It took me out of the Big Brother space, and allowed me to think and see a different part of the world.

I was also in South Africa sometime last year, and it was very nice, because I got to see so many beautiful places. I also engaged in a lot of activities that I had never done before. I went para-gliding and though it was very scary, I like to do adventurous and dangerous things.

I was also in Ghana a few weeks before BBN. It was a girl’s trip, and we had so much fun.

I was also in the United Kingdom with my family a few months before BBN.

Fashion

Fashion has always been a way of life for me. I like to dress up, in the house or outside. Even when I am not going anywhere, I just want to dress up because it makes me feel good. I like very comfortable and simple clothing, and that was why I opted for owning a lounge wear brand. I just did what was within my comfort zone. Aside from liking to look good, I also want to make people look good and comfortable.

On a personal note though, my style is very conservative, comfortable and classy. I like to look nice and be comfortable at the same time. I do not like to be adjusting my dress in public.
