My marriage…With Dorathy Osaronu

How long have you been married?

It’s about two years and a few months now. I didn’t even realise it has been that long. Time flies when you are with the one you love.

Where and how did you meet your husband?

I met my husband in 2010 at his father’s school, where I went to take my West African Senior School Certificate Examination. We became really close. We met again years later, became friends again and got married. So, it was an accumulation of the emotions we had from our teenage years. I love to think that culminated in this beautiful union.

Did it cross your mind from the first day that you could end up together?

His father and mine had always been friends. So, we were always in each other’s faces. We automatically became family friends. When I first met him in 2010, I honestly did not know that we would end up together. I was too young to even think of that. But, when we met again in 2019 and became closer, I knew we would certainly get married. The signs were there and it was very obvious.

What is the most remarkable thing you love about your wedding day?

I love everything about my wedding day. It was like a scene from a romantic movie. It was a total shutdown in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Clips of it went viral and we became an Internet sensation. I loved the fact that I was marrying the man I loved who also loved me in return. This man knows me and I know him too.

How did you spend your honeymoon?

(Laughs) I know what you want to know. Well, we just spent a few weeks at a beautiful hotel together. We were just chilling. The destination was very private. I can’t tell you the location.

What is the most beautiful virtue you love about your husband?

I love everything about my husband. I love the fact that he is honest and he is family-oriented. He is caring and loving and he fears God. He is very kind as well. He is a very generous man, and I have learnt to be generous just like him. He has also taught me patience and kindness. He is a good man.

As a social media influencer, how has marriage helped your career?

I have always been a public person, even before marriage, but marriage took me from one to 1,000. I became so famous. My marriage put me in the limelight. My pre-wedding pictures went viral and the visibility was wide. People could not understand why a lady in a wheelchair was marrying a very handsome and physically-fit man like my husband. Some thought it was for the money but do I even have money? Although my father was kind – he is late now – my father-in-law is rich as well. Most of the people who know me today knew me because of my wedding. I am a family-oriented person and I tend to do more family-based content. So, I would say my marriage helped me build my social media career because it made me go viral. Now, I have just been appointed as a cabinet member of the new governor of Rivers State. It all started with my marriage.

How has marriage changed your outlook on life?

I have learnt to live for someone other than myself. Marriage has also taught me responsibility and accountability to another person. By the way, my husband is the easiest person anybody can get married to because he is very patient.

A lot of people said your marriage to your husband won’t last because of your disability, but it has been two years. How does it feel?

(Laughs) Let them keep talking. Na dem get their mouths! I am happy in my marriage. My husband loves me so much and I love him too. That is all that matters. I found love despite my disability because I don’t see the disability. I am a Chief Executive Officer of a skincare brand, I am a princess, graduate of marketing and now a cabinet member in Rivers State. What else can I ask for? I advise those naysayers to concentrate on working on their lives first before throwing stones at me because I am living my best life.

As a public figure, how do you balance your work with home duties?

It can be a lot of work, especially as a woman with disability. However, I have managed to do so because I have good support systems that have worked for me. My family is there. My husband and his father are also there, so I take each day as it comes, one day at a time.

What secrets can you give to intending couples, especially those living with disabilities?

They should just be themselves. The one for them would find them.
