It would be recalled that the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, recently stepped up the campaign against spousal abuse in the state.
Mrs. Obaseki spoke beside the hospital bed of one Mrs. Tina Okhiria who is recovering from amputation of her left hand after being shot by her abusive husband Mr. Jason Okhiria, now in police custody in Benin City.
The First Lady urged members of the public to approach the state Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues over issues of spousal battery, as no individual regardless of status or influence has the right to abuse their spouse.
Mrs. Obaseki said marriage ought to be a source of happiness and fulfillment, not a prison sentence.
