CLEAN Up Nigeria, an international non-governmental organization, has announced that Akwa Ibom State has won the “Cleanest State Award 2022,” claiming that it has held the top spot for the past four years.
The group also provided the following index of the cleanest geopolitical zones: South South was first, followed by South East; South West was third, North East was fourth, North Central was fifth, and North West was sixth.
Its National Co-ordinator, Prince Ene Baba Owoh, revealed this while announcing the ‘State of the Nigerian Environment’ in Abuja, stating that Ebonyi State came second, while Bauchi State took third.
Owoh explained that the year 2022 study has 70% input from satellite monitoring with the applied performance indicators to score the ratings of states/cities on their Cleanliness Index across the board.
He stated that Prof. Solomon Balogun led the national technical study group, which demonstrated statistical analysis of the various stages of evaluated results on a quarterly basis to the final results on zones, states, and cities.
“Our international partners arrived at this unbiased national and global environmental assignment through one of the major four-point agenda “to move from ambition to action, accountability, and implementation,” he said.
In response, Obong Prince Ikim, Chairman of the State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, and Dr. Richard Nnabu, Commissioner of Environment in Ebonyi State, dedicated the awards to their respective state governors.
