The publication of the 2026 Phillips Consulting State Performance Index (pSPI) should serve as a moment of sober reflection for the Edo State government, policymakers, civil society, and citizens across Nigeria. Designed to assess governance and development using objective indicators alongside citizens’ perceptions, the Index seeks to measure how effectively state governments translate public resources into tangible improvements in the lives of their people.
If Edo State’s performance in the 2026 assessment falls short of expectations, the appropriate response should not be denial, political blame games, or attempts to discredit the exercise without evidence. Rather, it should be an opportunity for honest self-examination and decisive corrective action.
Edo State has long been regarded as one of Nigeria’s most historically significant states. It is home to a rich cultural heritage, an industrious population, respected educational institutions, fertile agricultural land, and enormous economic potential. These strengths should naturally position the state among Nigeria’s leading performers in governance and development.
However, potential alone does not create prosperity. What matters is the quality of leadership, the effectiveness of public institutions, prudent management of public resources, and the consistent delivery of services that improve citizens’ daily lives.
Development is measured not by speeches, political slogans, or impressive ceremonies. It is measured by the quality of roads that citizens drive on, the functionality of hospitals, the standard of public schools, employment opportunities for young people, security in communities, and the confidence investors have in the state’s economy.
The Phillips Consulting State Performance Index was developed precisely to encourage this evidence-based assessment of governance. It evaluates states across multiple sectors, using measurable indicators as well as citizen feedback, to provide a more complete picture of public sector performance.
No responsible government should fear independent evaluation. On the contrary, credible assessments should be welcomed as tools for continuous improvement.
This is not the time for political defensiveness. The people of Edo deserve more than political exchanges; they deserve practical solutions that improve their quality of life.
Government should carefully examine the findings, identify areas of weakness, consult experts, engage stakeholders, and implement reforms with measurable targets. Priorities should include improving infrastructure, strengthening healthcare and education, promoting transparency in public finance, supporting local businesses, creating employment opportunities, and ensuring value for every public naira spent.
Equally, citizens must recognize that development is a shared responsibility. Active civic participation, tax compliance, community engagement, and constructive criticism all contribute to stronger institutions and better governance.
History has shown that states can reverse poor rankings through visionary leadership, disciplined implementation, and sustained reforms. Indeed, the Momentum Index introduced alongside the 2026 pSPI highlights that improvement over time is both possible and measurable.
Edo State possesses the human capital, natural resources, entrepreneurial spirit, and historical legacy required to compete with the best-performing states in Nigeria. What is needed now is renewed commitment to accountability, transparency, innovation, and people-centered governance.
The message from the 2026 State Performance Index should therefore be seen not as a verdict of hopelessness but as a challenge to do better.
The true legacy of any administration is not measured by political victories but by the lasting impact it leaves on the lives of ordinary citizens.
For Edo State, the time for excuses has passed. The time for measurable performance, responsible governance, and sustainable development is now.
Edo State belongs to all of us, we must put all instruments of the state to catapult our blessed Edo State to an enviable one, that we all can be proud of and celebrated.
