The Nigeria Police Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos, has appealed to Nigerians to refrain from spreading unverified allegations surrounding the death of Miss Mary Habila, urging the public to allow investigators to establish the facts before drawing conclusions.
In a statement issued on Friday, the spokesperson for the Police Headquarters Annex, Lagos, CSP Nkeiruka Nwode, described Habila’s death as a heartbreaking tragedy and extended her heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and all those affected by the loss.
Nwode stressed the importance of allowing the appropriate authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation, including an autopsy, to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
She noted that while the loss has generated widespread emotions, justice for the deceased must be balanced with fairness to everyone connected to the case.
> “Grief should never become an excuse for speculation, character assassination, or the spread of unverified information. No one should be tried and convicted on social media,” she said.
The police spokesperson emphasized that public discussions should be guided by verified facts rather than rumours, insisting that due process must be allowed to run its full course.
She also cautioned against exploiting the incident to spread defamatory statements or inflame public sentiment, warning that careless allegations could irreparably damage reputations built over many years.
According to Nwode, responsibility must prevail over sensationalism, while justice should take precedence over prejudice as investigations continue.
She concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of Miss Mary Habila’s soul and asked God to comfort her family and loved ones, expressing hope that truth, justice, and peace would ultimately prevail.
