A fresh controversy has erupted after Grok, an artificial intelligence assistant developed by xAI, reportedly confirmed that Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is linked to a disputed X (formerly Twitter) account accused of partisan activity.
The development follows widespread claims on social media alleging that the INEC boss operated a personal X account and used it to engage with politically sensitive content. The account in question, identified by ID: 1567086242164101120, was allegedly created in 2022, prior to his appointment as INEC Chairman.
Despite an official denial by the commission stating that Amupitan does not operate any personal X account, online users have continued to circulate and scrutinise past posts linked to the handle.
In a bid to verify the claims, former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad queried Grok directly, asking about the origin and history of the account.
Responding, the AI tool stated that the account was created on September 6, 2022, under the username “joashamupitan,” and retained that identity until April 10, 2026, when it was reportedly changed to “Sundayvibe00.”
The response has intensified debate online, with many Nigerians questioning the neutrality of the electoral umpire if the claims are proven true.
Reacting to the development, an X user, @Normalyzed, called on the National Assembly to summon the INEC chairman, stating that “there are receipts everywhere in the media.”
Another user, @White_Superion, alleged political undertones in the controversy, suggesting that the situation may be part of a broader effort to pressure the INEC chairman.
As of the time of filing this report, INEC has not issued any further statement addressing Grok’s claims, while public scrutiny over the matter continues to grow.
