Christians around the world marked Palm Sunday with colourful processions, heartfelt worship, and a renewed call for peace, as celebrations unfolded against the backdrop of global tensions.
The day, which marks the beginning of Holy Week, commemorates the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem—an event remembered for its message of humility and peace, symbolised by palm branches waved by welcoming crowds.
At the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful message during Mass at St. Peter’s Square, urging the world to reject violence. Speaking to thousands of worshippers, he emphasised that faith should never be used to justify conflict, reminding believers that God stands for peace, not war.
He also expressed concern for Christians in conflict-affected regions, especially in the Middle East, where many are unable to fully observe the sacred season.
A Strong Turnout in Nigeria
In Nigeria, the spirit of the day was evident as large crowds gathered in churches and open spaces across cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. Worshippers sang hymns, waved palm fronds, and joined processions that reflected both joy and reverence.
Despite rising living costs, many churches recorded full attendance, with multiple services held to accommodate the faithful. For many, it was a moment to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the deeper meaning of the season.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) used the occasion to call on leaders to show empathy and ease the burden on citizens. The group noted that Jesus’ humble entry into Jerusalem serves as a reminder that true leadership is rooted in peace, compassion, and service.
As Holy Week begins, Palm Sunday has once again brought together millions in faith—offering not just celebration, but a shared hope for a more peaceful and compassionate world.
