Nigeria, UK Sign Landmark Agreements on Migration, Border Security, and Business Visas

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have taken a major step to strengthen bilateral cooperation, signing three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering migration, border security, and business visas.

The agreements, signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in the UK on Wednesday and Thursday, aim to enhance collaboration in migration management, tackle organised immigration crime, and expand business visa access for UK companies operating in Nigeria. This was confirmed in a statement by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Babatunde Alao.

Speaking on the MoUs, Tunji-Ojo highlighted that the agreements reflect Nigeria’s commitment to a migration system that is transparent, safe, and aligned with both national and international standards. “The partnership underscores a shared determination to build a migration system that is safe, orderly, and mutually beneficial,” he said, noting that the focus over the next year would be on measurable progress and effective implementation.

The Minister also acknowledged Nigeria’s strong working relationship with the UK Home Office. “This relationship with the UK means a lot to us and reflects the level of commitment that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put in,” Tunji-Ojo said.

On the business visa agreement, he emphasized its potential to drive socio-economic development in Nigeria. “Following the bold reforms of President Tinubu, visa facilitation serves as a catalyst for growth. Personally, I am very happy with this agreement, as it is something we have been looking forward to,” he stated. He further stressed that removing barriers such as irregular migration is essential for Nigeria’s goal of building a trillion-dollar economy.

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised the partnership, describing Nigeria as “number one in successful bilateral relations” with the UK. “We have bilateral discussions with many countries, but Nigeria stands out for having achieved such an extensive agreement. We share a vision for the work our countries can do together,” she said.

UK Trade Envoy Florence Eshalomi also hailed the expansion of business visas as a significant step for economic growth in Africa’s largest economy.

The specific agreements include:

Migration Partnership MoU: Establishes a framework to promote safe, orderly, and regulated migration while upholding national laws, international obligations, and human rights.

Statement of Intent on Organised Immigration Crime and Border Security: Outlines a three-year strategic plan between the UK Home Office and Nigeria’s Ministry of Interior to combat criminal networks profiting from irregular migration.

Expansion of Business Visas MoU: Expands the Business Visa Scheme for UK companies with verified business or investment interests in Nigeria, facilitating easier mobility for legitimate business travellers.

These agreements mark a bold step in Nigeria-UK relations, aiming to boost security cooperation, economic growth, and opportunities for cross-border trade and investment.
