U.S. Congressman Moves to Condemn ‘Persecution of Christians in Nigeria,’ Backs Trump’s Global Faith Defense Efforts

A United States lawmaker, Congressman Riley Moore, has announced plans to introduce a House resolution condemning what he calls the “ongoing persecution of Christians in Nigeria.”

In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, Moore said the resolution will also reaffirm support for President Donald Trump’s renewed global campaign to protect persecuted Christians.

“Tomorrow I will introduce a new resolution condemning the ongoing persecution of Christians in Nigeria and supporting President Trump’s efforts to defend our brothers and sisters in Christ,” Moore wrote.

“Thousands have been killed for their faith — and the world has looked away for far too long.”

The U.S. lawmaker emphasized that the resolution aims to draw international attention to the rising wave of religiously motivated violence in Nigeria and to call for stronger global intervention to safeguard Christian communities.

Moore also expressed gratitude to Trump for prioritizing religious freedom on the global stage, saying he was “honoured to take up the mantle in Congress.”

“Thank you, President Trump, for your incredible leadership in defending all persecuted Christians in Nigeria,” Moore added.

“I am grateful for your trust in me to lead this effort in the House alongside Chairman Tom Cole.”

The announcement comes amid escalating diplomatic tension between Washington and Abuja after President Trump designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged large-scale killings of Christians by Islamist extremists.

The Nigerian government, however, has rejected the characterization, maintaining that the violence affects both Muslims and Christians and that it continues to uphold the constitutional right to freedom of religion.

Moore’s proposed resolution, once introduced, is expected to intensify U.S. congressional scrutiny of Nigeria’s human rights and religious freedom record.
