Tragedy in Edo: One Abducted Seminarian Dies as Two Regain Freedom — Catholic Diocese Mourns Loss

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has confirmed the death of a minor seminarian, Emmanuel Alabi, who was abducted alongside two others in July 2025 during a violent attack on the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivianokpodi, Edo State.

In a press statement issued by the Assistant Director of Communications, Rev. Fr. Linus Imoedemhe, the Diocese announced Alabi’s passing with “deep sorrow,” while also expressing gratitude to God for the safe release of Joshua Aleobua.

The statement recounted that on July 10, 2025, armed men invaded the seminary, killing a civil defence officer and abducting three seminarians — Japhet Jesse, Joshua Aleobua, and Emmanuel Alabi.

“While we thank God for the safe release of Japhet Jesse and, most recently, Joshua Aleobua, we are heartbroken to announce the death of seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who lost his life during the ordeal,” the statement read.

Bishop Gabriel G. Dunia of the Diocese expressed profound grief over the loss, urging security agencies to intensify efforts toward safeguarding citizens. He also cautioned political leaders against ignoring the worsening insecurity across the nation, urging them to prioritize public safety over political ambitions as the 2027 elections approach.

The Diocese called on all faithful and people of goodwill to join in prayers for the repose of Alabi’s soul and for lasting peace, healing, and security in Nigeria.
