Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has pardoned six inmates serving jail terms in correctional facilities across the state, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Governor Fintiri said the gesture was in line with the constitutional provisions empowering him to exercise the prerogative of mercy. He noted that the beneficiaries had demonstrated genuine remorse and good conduct during their time in custody.
“Therefore, in the exercise of my prerogative of mercy as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in line with the recommendations of the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, I have granted pardon to six persons who have served various jail terms and have significantly demonstrated good conduct over the years,” the governor said.
The governor ordered their immediate release and directed the relevant authorities to ensure compliance with the pardon.
Those discharged include Wamari Godwin, Abraham Marksunil, David Paul, Ibrahim Adamu, Usman Inuwa, and Sani Yahaya.
Nigeria commemorates its Independence Day every October 1, marking its freedom from British colonial rule in 1960. The day is observed nationwide with official events, cultural activities, and community festivities. However, this year, the federal government suspended the traditional military parades.
