The father of Ukpo Nwamini David, the young man at the centre of the infamous Senator Ike Ekweremadu organ trafficking case, has reportedly died of heartbreak after years without contact with his son.
Speaking to Hobnob News on Monday morning, one of the deceased’s sons, Boniface Nwamini Ukpo, confirmed that their father passed away at about 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
“Yes, my father died yesterday afternoon by 12 p.m. It’s so sad that since the incident happened in 2022, we have not spoken with my brother, David Nwamini,” Boniface said. “My father has been sick over the saga and yesterday he finally died.”
David Nwamini came to global attention in 2022 when it was revealed that he had been taken from Lagos to the United Kingdom by Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a Nigerian doctor, Obinna Obeta, allegedly for the purpose of harvesting his kidney for the senator’s seriously ill daughter.
In March 2023, a London court convicted all three for conspiring to arrange the travel of a man in order to harvest his organs. According to the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison, his wife to four years and six months, while Dr. Obeta – described by prosecutors as the middleman – was jailed for 10 years.
Since the scandal broke, David has reportedly been out of contact with his family, a situation relatives say contributed to his father’s failing health and eventual death.
