With political momentum gradually building ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has said former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential candidacy appears more appealing than that of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.
According to Hobnob News, the Forum’s Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, made the assertion during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, where he dismissed Obi’s recent one-term pledge as “a clear act of desperation.”
“The one-term issue is simply political talk, a clear act of desperation,” Prof. Tukur said, suggesting that such promises may not hold weight with the electorate.
While acknowledging that Jonathan has not formally declared his intention to run, Prof. Tukur noted that the former president has gained significant goodwill since leaving office in 2015, which could work in his favour should he choose to contest.
“On the surface, Goodluck Jonathan appears attractive. Over time, and especially since 2015, he has accumulated a lot of positives. He gave up when he thought he lost the election, and he has been living a quiet life,” he said.
He further highlighted Jonathan’s international engagements and recognition post-presidency as factors enhancing his public image.
“Developments since 2015 seem to favour him. However, it’s still a long way till 2027, and he will need to do a lot to sell himself,” he added.
Although Jonathan has remained silent on the 2027 presidential race, speculation has intensified over his potential return, with multiple reports suggesting he may be preparing to re-enter the political arena.
The Arewa Consultative Forum’s comments come as political realignments and early campaign rhetoric begin to shape the discourse ahead of what is expected to be a hotly contested presidential election.
