PDP Confirms Moves to Woo Peter Obi Back Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed it is actively working to bring former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, back into its ranks.

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed this during an appearance on Arise Television, describing Obi as a political asset whose return would enhance the party’s electoral prospects.

Abdullahi commended Obi’s 2023 presidential performance, highlighting the over six million votes he secured despite what he called “massive rigging” and “deliberate frustration” in several states.

“Peter Obi is our product. We want him back. He is great capital for any political party,” Abdullahi said. “Had he not faced institutional obstacles, we believe he would have performed even better. His ability to command over six million votes shows he is not a candidate anyone should ignore.”

Obi left the PDP for the Labour Party shortly before the 2023 primaries. He eventually finished third behind PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and APC’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His popularity, especially among young and urban voters, has positioned him as one of Nigeria’s leading opposition figures.

Abdullahi admitted Obi’s departure dealt the PDP a blow, but insisted it had not affected the respect he commands within the party. “Any political party would benefit from having him, and PDP is not giving up on that effort,” he noted.

He added that internal consultations and long-term strategic planning were underway within the PDP as it prepares for the 2027 general elections. Reuniting with Obi, he said, is part of that broader strategy.

“In the fullness of time, we believe we might get him back. It will be a big boost to the PDP,” Abdullahi stated.

The PDP’s outreach comes amid growing calls for Nigeria’s opposition parties to form a grand alliance ahead of 2027. Political observers argue that only a united opposition can effectively challenge the APC, which has held federal power since 2015.
