PDP Plots Repeat of 1999 Deal as Coalition Talks Gain Momentum

As Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race takes shape, opposition parties are intensifying coalition talks, with the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, holding a closed-door meeting with the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, Bala Mohammed, in Bauchi on Thursday.

Sources within the Bauchi State Government House disclosed that Obi’s visit aimed to solidify alliances within the opposition and explore a possible return to the PDP. There has been mounting pressure from key PDP figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, urging Obi and his running mate, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, to rejoin the party in a bid to forge a united front for the 2027 elections.

A source familiar with the discussions revealed that Atiku had earlier sought the intervention of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to convince Obi to return to the PDP fold. The failure of the PDP in 2023 was largely due to zoning disputes. The party leadership now understands the need for sacrifices and strategic realignments, the source stated.

Following the meeting, Governor Mohammed reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the opposition, describing Obi as the leader of opposition in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for a coalition capable of challenging the ruling party.

As a person, I am ready to work with Mr. Peter Obi to ensure we close ranks and provide the country with good governance,Mohammed declared. Our coming together is a message that will resonate across Nigeria. We will take this further, and you will see more engagements between Obi, PDP governors, and the party itself.

Obi, in his remarks, stressed the need for continuous dialogue about Nigeria’s future. The North is a critical component in addressing the nation’s challenges. Issues of poverty must be tackled before we can address criminality, he stated. He also highlighted the potential of agriculture in transforming the economy, referencing his recent visit to Indonesia.

Meanwhile, discussions within the PDP indicate that prominent figures like Buba Galadima have urged Atiku to step aside for a younger candidate. Our major problem is age. If I were Atiku’s adviser, I would tell him to step aside and support the coalition to move Nigeria forward,Galadima asserted.

With the 2027 elections still years away, the evolving coalition dynamics indicate a potential repeat of the 1999 political alliance that brought together key opposition figures to unseat the ruling party. Whether Obi will officially return to the PDP or if a new opposition structure will emerge remains to be seen. However, the latest engagements signal a determined effort to challenge the status quo in the coming elections.
