Kano Security Forces Arrest 28 Suspected Thugs, Seize Weapons and Drugs

In a decisive move to curb rising criminal activities, the Kano State Joint Security Taskforce Committee has arrested 28 suspected thugs (Yan Daba) accused of plotting violent disruptions in the state. The arrests were made following intelligence reports that indicated plans for thuggery-related activities, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.

This development was confirmed in a statement released on Thursday by the committee’s Public Relations Officer, who also serves as the state Commissioner of Information, Ibrahim Waiya. According to the statement, the arrests took place between March 3rd and 13th, 2025, as part of a series of coordinated security operations across key locations in Kano Metropolis.

“The joint security operations led to the arrest of 28 suspected thugs and the recovery of dangerous weapons and illicit substances,” the statement revealed. The security team, which included personnel from the police, Department of State Services (DSS), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Correctional Services, and Vigilante groups, launched targeted raids based on credible intelligence.

Among the items recovered were 283 parcels and 14 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, a cutlass, three pairs of scissors, a pointed iron rod, two bottles of toxic substances commonly known as “Suck and Die,” 13 packets of fireworks, and a rubber solution often abused as an intoxicant.

Following their arrest, the suspects have been arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court Number 12 at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport for prosecution.

In a bid to maintain order during Ramadan, the Task Force Committee reaffirmed the state government’s ban on all traditional performances known as “Tashe,” which have been linked to thuggery and public disturbances. The use of fireworks, commonly known as knockouts or bangers, has also been strictly prohibited, with violators warned of severe legal consequences.

The Chairman of the committee, Yusuf Kofarmata, commended the dedication of the security officers involved in the operations and urged law-abiding citizens to support law enforcement efforts in ensuring peace and security across the state.

With these arrests, the Kano State Government continues its crackdown on crime, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding residents and maintaining public order.
