A chilling wave of terror has struck the heart of student life in Katsina State as armed bandits abducted four students from their off-campus residence near the Federal University Dutsinma. Hobnob News has obtained details of this latest harrowing incident, which underscores the escalating security crisis plaguing Nigerian campuses.
The abduction occurred at approximately 2:20 am on Sunday, when a large group of armed bandits stormed Paris Quarters, located behind the university. The victims have been identified as Wali Kayode (25), Fahad Muhammad (20), Emmanuel (surname unknown), and another individual yet to be identified.
Despite a distress call and the subsequent mobilization of security operatives, the bandits managed to escape with their captives. Security sources have confirmed that efforts are underway to track down the kidnappers and ensure the safe return of the students.
This incident is the latest in a series of alarming attacks on educational institutions across Nigeria. In April 2021, Greenfield University in Kaduna State witnessed a similar tragedy, with at least 20 students and two staff members abducted. Tragically, three of the kidnapped students were later found dead. Further attacks have occurred at the Federal University of Agriculture in Makurdi, Benue State, Confluence University in Kogi State, and Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, also in Makurdi.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised a resounding alarm over the relentless kidnappings, demanding urgent action from the Federal Government. NANS has specifically called for the swift rescue of four female students abducted from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University in February.
“NANS is alarmed at the rate at which students are being abducted on campuses of tertiary institutions in the country. This is not only worrisome, but, an ugly trend that needs to be arrested before it spirals out of control,” stated Akinbodunse Felicia, NANS National Vice President, Inter-Campus Affairs. “It is highly unfortunate that campuses of tertiary institutions that used to be most secure, have now become fertile ground where kidnappers operate.”
The student body has condemned the “act of wickedness” and urged the Federal Government, the Benue State Government, and security agencies to prioritize the safe return of the abducted students. The repeated targeting of students has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty on campuses, undermining the pursuit of education. Hobnob News will continue to monitor this developing situation and provide updates as they become available.
