The federal government has prohibited Nigerian military personnel from engaging in homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, cross-dressing, and other activities deemed unethical for the armed forces.
Service members are also banned from body piercing, tattooing, disorderly conduct, drunkenness, and romantic relationships with subordinates or their spouses.
These guidelines are detailed in Section 26 of the updated Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, which President Bola Tinubu approved on December 16, 2024.
The document states, “An officer must not engage in homosexuality, lesbianism, or bestiality. He/she is also prohibited from participating in activities associated with the LGBTQIA2S+ community or cross-dressing.”
Additionally, officers are required to fulfill financial and legal obligations, such as paying vehicle licenses and insurance on time. Issuing dud cheques or neglecting these duties is categorized as a serious offence.
They are further barred from joining secret societies or political parties, misusing government property, engaging in private businesses, or accepting gifts and favors from junior colleagues.
The directives also warn against actions that could misuse government resources or damage the reputation of the armed forces. Specific penalties for violating these rules are not disclosed.
