The Federal Government has implemented a significant upward review of allowances for officers in public service, a move aimed at improving the welfare of public officials across the country.
The reviewed allowances include Duty Tour Allowance (DTA), transport allowances, uniform allowances, and overtime allowances. This decision was made during the 46th meeting of the National Council on Establishment (NCE), which is recognized as the highest policy-making body for public service matters.
The meeting, chaired by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, brought together Heads of Service from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The NCE serves as a key platform for addressing critical issues affecting the public service and ensuring that policies align with the needs of officers.
Prior to the council’s deliberations, a two-day technical session was convened under the leadership of the Permanent Secretary of the Service Policies and Strategies Office. This preparatory session was attended by permanent secretaries and directors of establishments from all 36 states and the FCT, with the Director of Organisation Design and Development acting as secretary.
The NCE reviewed a total of 32 memoranda during its meeting. Out of these, six were approved, eight were stepped down, six were rejected, seven were referred to the Standing Committee for further consideration, one was noted, and three were marked for re-presentation. Among the approved resolutions was the upward adjustment of rates for various allowances paid to public service officers.
A comprehensive review of the Schemes of Service was also approved to ensure alignment with the council’s latest decisions. This adjustment is expected to enhance the operational efficiency and motivation of public officials while addressing longstanding disparities in the remuneration framework.
The Head of the Civil Service, Didi Walson-Jack, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the working conditions of public servants, emphasizing that the welfare of employees remains a priority.
This policy decision is seen as a significant step in modernizing Nigeria’s public service and promoting efficiency and dedication among officers nationwide.
