Federal Government Upgrades Nasarawa’s Marhai Forest Reserve to National Park

The Federal Government has elevated the Marhai Forest Reserve in Nasarawa State to the status of a National Park, marking a pivotal step in Nigeria’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The announcement was made through a press statement on Friday, signed by Ibrahim Haruna, Director of the Press and Public Relations Unit at the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Balarabe Lawal, the Minister of Environment, described this development as a milestone in advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing its alignment with sustainable development goals. According to Lawal, the upgrade exemplifies cooperative federalism, where state and federal governments collaborate to secure environmental preservation for future generations.

“The journey to transform the Marhai Forest Reserve into a National Park began in 2011. Despite challenges in managing the reserve, we have succeeded, thanks to the support of relevant local and international stakeholders,” the minister said. Lawal also urged the host community to partner with the National Park Service (NPS) and the ministry to ensure the park meets global standards.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State expressed optimism about the transformation, describing it as a significant step in safeguarding the state’s natural heritage. He highlighted the unique ecosystem, diverse wildlife, and picturesque landscapes of the reserve, calling it a source of pride for the state and the nation.

“This handover underscores the importance of sustainable environmental stewardship. The Marhai Forest Reserve represents a jewel in the state’s biodiversity, and it is imperative we preserve it for current and future generations,” Governor Sule remarked.

He tasked the NPS with enhancing the ecological integrity of the park, promoting eco-tourism, and fostering community development. The governor stressed the need for active community engagement to ensure the benefits of this partnership are inclusive, adding that such an approach would make the Marhai National Park a global model for conservation and environmental stability.

The Federal Ministry of Environment reiterated its commitment to overcoming challenges related to the effective management of the park, emphasizing collaboration with stakeholders to promote sustainable practices and biodiversity conservation.

This initiative underscores the Federal Government’s dedication to advancing eco-tourism and environmental conservation while positioning Nigeria as a leader in sustainable development.
