The Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) has condemned the police’s violent tactics during the #EndBadGovernance protests, which resulted in the deaths of at least 24 protesters. The group has called for the immediate suspension of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to facilitate an impartial and independent investigation into the deadly police crackdown.
The YRC’s call follows the release of Amnesty International’s report, “Bloody August: Nigerian Government’s Violent Crackdown on #EndBadGovernance Protests,” which documents extrajudicial killings and violent suppression by security operatives during the protests in August.
The group criticized the authorities for turning a blind eye to state-sponsored thugs who attacked peaceful protesters, particularly in Ojota, Lagos. The YRC also decried the harassment of journalists covering the protests, citing incidents of police brutality against reporters.
The YRC demanded the prosecution of all police officers and officers of other security agencies responsible for the killings of innocent Nigerians during the protests. The group also called for the constitution of an impartial and independent panel to oversee the investigation and ensure justice for the victims of police violence.
