US Approves $385M Arms Deal with Taiwan to Boost Air Defense Amid Rising Tensions with China

The United States has approved the sale of spare parts for fighter jets, radar systems, and communication equipment to Taiwan, with deals totaling $385 million. This latest arms sale underscores Washington’s enduring support for the self-ruled island amid ongoing tensions with China.

Strengthening Taiwan’s Defense Capabilities

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced that $320 million of the sale involves equipment sourced from existing US military stocks, including parts for F-16 fighter jets and radar systems. Deliveries are expected to commence in 2025. The State Department approved the sales, with the DSCA officially notifying Congress on Friday.

Taiwan’s defense ministry expressed gratitude, highlighting that the equipment will bolster the combat readiness of its Air Force and strengthen the island’s air defense capabilities. “Taiwan and the United States will continue to consolidate our security partnership,” the ministry stated.

Taiwan’s Strategic Resolve

This marks the 18th arms sale to Taiwan under President Joe Biden’s administration. Taiwan’s foreign ministry emphasized its commitment to fortifying its defenses amid increased military pressure and “grey zone harassment” from China.

China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, has repeatedly condemned US arms sales to the island, viewing them as provocations undermining regional stability.

Taiwan President’s International Engagement

The arms deal coincides with Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te’s departure for a diplomatic visit to three Pacific allies, with scheduled stopovers in Hawaii and Guam. The trip highlights Taiwan’s efforts to strengthen its international presence and alliances in the face of Beijing’s diplomatic and military challenges.

The approved arms sale reaffirms Washington’s strategic alignment with Taiwan, reinforcing its capacity to counter mounting regional threats while advancing mutual security interests.
