Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has suspended his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Mr. Wale Ajetunmobi, over a controversial post on his personal X account (formerly Twitter).
This development was announced on Tuesday through a statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, titled “Governor Sanwo-Olu Suspends Aide.”
The suspension stems from Ajetunmobi’s misrepresentation of facts in a post regarding events during the 2020 #EndSARS protests. According to Akosile, the Lagos State Government “strongly condemns any form of extra-judicial action and disassociates itself from such practices. This administration prioritizes justice and due process.”
The controversy began after a deleted post on Ajetunmobi’s X account, where he reportedly claimed that arsonists involved in burning Television Continental (TVC) during the #EndSARS protests had been “hunted down and executed.” The post alleged that one of the deceased was a young trader from the Ketu area, purportedly found with an AK-47 rifle at the scene.
Reacting to a user who questioned if the incidents constituted extra-judicial killings, Ajetunmobi responded, stating, “An exchange of fire occurred, and arsonists were overpowered and killed. Others fled.”
The incident drew public backlash, prompting Ajetunmobi to issue a clarification. In a post shared early Tuesday morning, he described the use of the term “executed” as erroneous and insisted that his comments were personal opinions, not reflective of the government or his office.
“This excerpt was quoted out of context,” he wrote, adding that the original post and subsequent clarifications had been deleted prior to the recent uproar.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s action underscores his administration’s commitment to accountability and adherence to the principles of justice.
