Four Men Banned for Life from Benin Community Over Alleged Gay Relationship

Four young men were banished for life from a community in Benin, Nigeria, after being caught allegedly engaging in a same-sex relationship—an act considered illegal in the country.

The local community, angered by the incident, gathered to publicly shame the boys before instructing them to never return. An irate mob warned, “Don’t come to Upper again,” as the accused were forced into a tricycle headed for an uncertain destination. Despite their anger, the community spared their lives, opting for exile as punishment instead.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the boys sitting sadly in the tricycle, visibly embarrassed as they left. The incident has ignited intense online reactions.

Netizens shared divided opinions on the situation. Some supported the community’s decision, with one comment stating, “Na so e suppose be now! But una no suppose allow them enter the same keke! Them fit go start family now for new location.”

Others criticized the focus on such matters, commenting, “Nigerians getting triggered over inconsequential issues.” The differing viewpoints reflect the ongoing debate about societal norms and the handling of issues related to same-sex relationships in Nigeria, highlighting the complexities surrounding cultural values, legal enforcement, and human rights discussions.
